Celestial Radio is a radio station housed within a sailing boat, its hull adorned with 60,000 mirror tiles transforming it into a glittering cosmic orb and a functional sculptural object. The reflective surface scatters light into Morse Code-like patterns, while the station broadcasts experimental sound, music, and conversations.
The Celeste traverses both the high seas and the metaphorical oceans of life’s profound questions, exploring the otherworldly and the microscopic. Each time it docks at a new shore, the artists onboard engage with local communities, thinkers, poets, historians, musicians, and knowledge holders. Together, they weave conversations around visionary ideas, field recordings, and archival material into kaleidoscopic, site-specific broadcasts. These transmissions reflect a fresh vision of the lands and peoples encountered, turning every port of call into a living soundscape.
Origins
Celestial Radio was originally commissioned in 2004 by Commissions East and Essex County Council. The project reimagined the Bradwell Peninsula, an overlooked stretch of the Essex coastline just an hour from London. Despite its proximity to the city, the area retains a distinctly remote atmosphere and a rich, often untold history. Inspired by the legacy of Radio Caroline, once a fixture in these waters, Celestial Radio re-mythologised the landscape, blending stories of science, faith, past, and present.
Celestial Voyages
Since its maiden voyage, Celestial Radio has sailed to coastal sites worldwide, broadcasting site responsive sound works that echo the spirit of each place. By collecting and amplifying local voices, it transforms locations into living soundscapes. Over time, Celeste has evolved into a social sculpture, reimagining sites through collective creativity and shared storytelling.
